Illawarra Children's Services

Supporting Children with Additional Needs (SCAN)

The Supporting Children with Additional Needs (SCAN) scheme aims to provide eligible State only funded children's services with the resources to assist children with additional needs to have equal access to a quality early childhood or vacation care experience.

The SCAN scheme is funded by the NSW Department of Community Services (DoCS). Illawarra Children's Services manages the SCAN scheme in the Illawarra, Southern NSW and South West Sydney areas.

SCAN funding scheme

The SCAN funding scheme provides a contribution towards the cost of a child's placement in an eligible State funded children's service in the Southern (Illawarra and Southern NSW) and South West Sydney areas.

Illawarra Children's Services also delivers support to include children with additional needs from the SCAN target groups

Target groups

The target population groups for children with additional needs eligible to access SCAN funds are:

- Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) children
- Children from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds
- Children with challenging behaviours (CB)
- Children with disabilities (Dis)

The children in attendance at the eligible services may be between birth and 12 years of age.

Eligible children's services

NSW children's services that are State only funded and are not an approved service for the purpose of receiving the Commonwealth Child Care Benefit (CCB) are eligible to apply for SCAN funding.

Generally, eligible services are:

- Preschools
- Occasional care services
- Vacation care services
- Some places in multipurpose services, where these places are State funded only and are not eligible for CCB
