Billy Backpack races for a good cause
Illawarra Children’s Services’ own Billy Backpack made a very special appearance at Australia Day celebrations, jumping on a hospital bed for a good cause.
The Rotaract Hospital Beds Race is an annual event run in conjunction with Wollongong’s Australia Day celebrations at Belmore Basin.
This year’s race raised vital funds for Wollongong Hospital, with over $5,000 going towards the purchase of equipment for the respiratory ward.
A favourite with children in the crowd – especially those starting school this week – Billy was pushed along by staff from Kiama Downs Children’s Centre and Central Office. The team got into the spirit and donned Billy’s colours, including blue t-shirts and bright orange tutus, for the race.
The Illawarra Children’s Services team put in a noble effort, finishing in fourth place, and coming second in the best dressed competition.
Word on the street is that Billy is already in training for next year’s effort!
