Dangers at play in uniform preschool learning
New research from leading educators warns against child care centres that make preschoolers wear uniforms and recite the alphabet, and emphasises the importance of play-based learning for children under five.
Margaret Sims, professor of early childhood at the University of New England, says children are “getting an over-scheduled, over-rushed childhood” by following a routine styled on primary schooling at too early an age, and that their brains “get wired up in a way that impairs learning” as a result.
Illawarra Children’s Services supports the crucial role of play in developing enriched and stimulating learning experiences for children.
